Britain's railways reach from London's grand Victorian termini to the far west of Cornwall and the Scottish Highlands. The main lines are quick and frequent, and the branch lines at their ends are among the most scenic in Europe.

The East Coast route
London → York → Edinburgh
From London the line runs north through York and Newcastle, then follows the cliffs of the Northumberland coast into Scotland.
The West Highland Line
Glasgow → Fort William → Mallaig
North of Glasgow the line climbs past lochs and across Rannoch Moor to Fort William, then crosses a curving viaduct on its way to the sea at Mallaig.
To the far south-west
London → Exeter → Plymouth → Penzance
The line west follows the sea wall along the Devon coast, then crosses the Tamar into Cornwall on its way to Penzance.
