The experience

A short walk from the platforms

Zürich's station is the launch point for this route east, with the old town and the lake only a short walk away. Stroll along the Bahnhofstrasse to the lakefront before you board. The Swiss National Museum, in a fairytale castle beside the station, is a quick introduction to the country you are about to cross.

A Zürich breakfastFood

Pick up a Birchermüesli, the oat and fruit dish created by a Zürich doctor, from a café near the station. Local bakeries sell Zopf, a braided butter bread that is perfect for the train.

A city of marksmenTraditions

Every September, Zürich's teenagers compete in the Knabenschiessen, a shooting contest that goes back centuries and comes with a large funfair. The winner is crowned king or queen of the marksmen.

Along the Walensee

The mainline follows the shore of Lake Zürich before running along the Walensee, where the cliffs of the Churfirsten drop straight into the water. Beyond Sargans it turns south up the Rhine valley to Chur.

Switzerland's oldest town

Chur claims to be Switzerland's oldest town, with a compact old quarter of narrow lanes and a cathedral dating back centuries. It is also where the mainline hands over to the narrow-gauge mountain railway heading further east. The Bündner Kunstmuseum shows art from the region, including works by the Giacometti family.

Mountain foodFood

Graubünden's kitchen is hearty mountain fare, from capuns, chard parcels filled with dough and dried meat, to barley soup. Air-dried Bündnerfleisch, sliced paper thin, is the region's most famous speciality.

Festivals and languagesTraditions

In August the Churer Fest fills the old town with music, food stalls and crowds from across the valley. Graubünden is also home to Romansh, Switzerland's fourth national language, which you will start to see on signs further up the line.

The Albula line

From Chur the narrow-gauge line climbs into the mountains on the Albula route, a UNESCO World Heritage railway. It crosses the curving Landwasser Viaduct straight into a tunnel in the cliff face, then corkscrews through spiral tunnels between Bergün and Preda. After the Albula Tunnel it drops into the Engadin, high and wide under the peaks.

Glaciers on the doorstep

Pontresina sits high in the Engadin valley, ringed by glaciers and some of the highest peaks in the eastern Alps. It has a slower pace than its more famous neighbour St Moritz. Walk into the Val Roseg or up the Morteratsch valley to reach the edge of a glacier.

Engadin treatsFood

Try pizokel, buckwheat dumplings tossed with cabbage and cheese, after a day on the trails. Engadiner Nusstorte, a caramel and walnut pie wrapped in shortcrust, keeps well for the journey home.

Engadin customsTraditions

On the first of March, children in the Engadin walk through the villages ringing cowbells for Chalandamarz to chase away the winter. In winter the frozen lake at St Moritz hosts horse races on the ice.
