Overview

The Gotthard route threads through the heart of Switzerland, from the German-speaking north to palm-lined Lugano in the Italian-speaking south.

“One country, two climates, a single railway.”

Old town and lakefront

Zürich pairs a compact, walkable old town with a long lakefront promenade. Its station is one of the busiest and best-connected in Europe, a fitting start for a journey across the Alps. Climb to the Lindenhof for a view over the Limmat, or visit the Fraumünster for its stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall.

Zürich at the tableFood

Try Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, sliced veal in a creamy mushroom sauce served with crisp rösti. For something sweet, the city's historic confectioners sell tiny macarons that make a good gift for the train.

Guilds and street partiesTraditions

In April the guilds parade through the old town for Sechseläuten, which ends with a snowman effigy set on fire to forecast the summer. In August the Street Parade fills the lakeside with music and dancing.

Lakes and hills

The line to Lucerne runs through rolling farmland and past the shores of Lake Zug, with the first mountains rising on the horizon. It is a short, gentle prelude to the Alps.

Bridges and lakeshores

Lucerne's wooden Chapel Bridge and lakeside setting, framed by Pilatus and Rigi, make it one of the most photographed towns in Switzerland. The old town is full of painted façades, and the Lion Monument, carved into a cliff, is one of the most moving memorials in Europe. It is a natural staging point before the climb into the mountains proper.

Up and out on the water

Paddle steamers cross Lake Lucerne to villages along its fjord-like arms. From Alpnachstad the steepest cogwheel railway in the world climbs Pilatus, while Rigi offers gentler walks and wide views over the lakes.

Lakeside flavoursFood

Order a Luzerner Chügelipastete, a puff-pastry vol-au-vent filled with veal and mushrooms that the city calls its own. Fish from the lake, such as perch or whitefish, is a lighter choice on a terrace by the water.

Carnival and musicTraditions

Lucerne's Fasnacht is one of the wildest carnivals in Switzerland, opening before dawn with a bang and brass bands in the streets. In summer the city hosts a world-class classical music festival in its concert hall by the lake.

Through the Gotthard

The line follows the shore of Lake Lucerne before heading up the Reuss valley towards the Gotthard. Most trains now take the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in the world, while the old mountain line above loops through spiral tunnels around the church at Wassen. South of the Alps the valleys of Ticino open up, with vineyards and stone villages on the way down to Lugano.

Switzerland, Italian style

South of the Gotthard, the climate and language change together. Lugano sits on its own lake, ringed by palm trees and mountains, and feels closer to northern Italy than to the Switzerland you left behind.

Lakeside walks

Stroll the lakefront from the Parco Ciani to the arcaded lanes of the old town and Piazza della Riforma. A funicular climbs Monte San Salvatore for a view across the lake to the Alps, and a boat trip reaches the village of Gandria, stacked above the water.

Ticino at the tableFood

Eat in a grotto, a rustic stone tavern in the woods, with polenta, local cheeses and a glass of Ticino Merlot. For dessert try torta di pane, a dense bread cake with raisins and nuts.

Fireworks and chestnutsTraditions

On the first of August, Swiss National Day, fireworks light up the lake and bonfires burn on the surrounding hills. Autumn brings chestnut festivals to the villages around Lugano, a nod to the food that kept the valleys going for centuries.

Into Lombardy

Leaving Lugano, the line crosses the lake on the stone causeway at Melide and follows its southern arm to the border at Chiasso. Beyond Como the hills fall away to the Lombard plain, with Milan's skyline ahead.

Cathedral and galleries

Milan closes the route with its vast Gothic cathedral, whose roof terraces let you walk among the spires. Next door, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of Europe's grandest shopping arcades. Leonardo's Last Supper is here too, in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, but it must be booked well ahead.

Milanese classicsFood

Milan's signature dishes are saffron risotto alla milanese and ossobuco, braised veal shank. In the early evening, join the locals for aperitivo, when a drink comes with a spread of small plates.

Milan's own calendarTraditions

Milan's carnival follows the old Ambrosian rite and runs a few days longer than anywhere else in Italy. In April the design world arrives for Milan Design Week, when showrooms and courtyards across the city open to visitors.
