Senate Square

Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral anchor a unified group of neoclassical facades in the historic centre. The open square makes an inviting first walk through the capital.

A living public interior

Oodi turns a central library into a welcoming public living room with terraces and shared spaces. Its contemporary architecture contrasts with the older civic square nearby.

Into lake country

The route leaves Helsinki's Baltic setting and crosses broad stretches of forest and lake country. Farther north, the landscape opens toward the Bothnian coast and Oulu.

At the river mouth

Oulu's Market Square and red wooden Market Hall recall its trading past beside the Bothnian coast. Across the river estuary, bridges and parks keep the water close to the city centre.

Northern comfort foodFood

Try salmon soup at the Market Hall, or look for rössypottu, a local potato and blood-pudding stew. The stalls offer a relaxed introduction to northern Finnish flavours.

North through the forests

Beyond Oulu, forests and open countryside accompany the journey farther north. Near Rovaniemi, the landscape gathers around the Kemijoki River at the edge of Lapland.

Near the Arctic Circle

Rovaniemi sits close to the Arctic Circle, where the Kemijoki River and northern forests shape the city’s wide-open setting. The landscape makes the transition from southern Finland to Lapland tangible.

Stories of the north

Arktikum brings together northern nature, culture and history through exhibitions with an Arctic perspective. It offers context for the region before an evening under the winter sky.

Practical info

Aurora season

In Finnish Lapland, the aurora season generally runs from late August to April. Several nights in Rovaniemi create more chances to look, but cloud cover and natural activity remain beyond anyone’s control.

Winter daylight

Winter days grow shorter as the route moves north. Keep city plans flexible and pack warm layers for time outdoors after dark.
