Romania has a large rail network that crosses the Carpathians in several places. From Bucharest, lines climb through the Prahova valley to Transylvania, with its medieval Saxon towns and fortified churches.

Bucharest → Sinaia → Brasov
North of Bucharest the line climbs into the Carpathians past Sinaia, then descends to Brașov.
Across Transylvania
Brasov → Sighișoara → Cluj-Napoca
From Brașov the line crosses rolling hills and Saxon villages to Sighișoara and on to Cluj.
