Portugal is easy to see by train along its Atlantic spine, from Lisbon through Coimbra to Porto. From Porto, one of Europe's loveliest river lines follows the Douro into the port-wine hills.

The Atlantic main line
Lisbon → Coimbra → Porto
The main line runs north from Lisbon through Coimbra, then near the coast past lagoons to Porto.
The Douro line
Porto → Peso da Régua
East of Porto the railway follows the river closely between terraced vineyards and old wine estates.
